This version was devised
by Stephanie Hirschman for her Latin Club in Lewes. She uses it to revise
verb endings and verb meanings.
"I use this game when
all present tense verb endings are known. The coloured cards need to be
cut out prior to class, and the small white call cards also need to be
cut out. They can be laminated before cutting for extra durability.
1. After a brief revision
session with plenty of drilling/chanting of full conjugations, each student
or pair of students is given a bingo card, and access to a pot of small
tiddlywinks or other markers (these are plentiful in any primary maths
resource room).
2. The teacher then
calls out a verb and the students cover the relevant translation (if they
have it) on their card with a tiddlywink.
3. A full card = BINGO!
and I always give a prize of a sweet or cheap pencil (I buy big packs
from our local £1 shop).
4. Then play again!
The winner can become the caller for the next round, which gives less
able members a better chance of winning… You can play English to Latin
(eg caller says I paint and children cover pingo on their cards, or Latin
to English. It could be a fun end-of-term activity or a good 5-10 minute
filler to round off a lesson. The game could also be adapted for past
tense conjugations or declensions. I have recently revamped the cards
to include colour to provide further stimulus for the kids to be able
to differentiate the endings."
